The airfield was inaugurated in March 1982 by the French président F. Mitterand and it has been exploited by Montluçon Air Service (daily flights Clermont-Ferrand – Montluçon-Guéret), Compagnie aérienne du Languedoc succeded by Air Littoral (Daily flights Paris-Orly – Montluçon-Guéret), Société d’aviation Roannaise, Transport Air Centre, Air Normandie, Air Bretagne.
The airport resides at an elevation of 1,367 feet (417 m) above mean sea level. It has one paved runway designated 17/35 with an asphalt surface measuring 1,900 by 45 metres (6,234 ft × 148 ft). It also has a parallel unpaved runway with a grass surface measuring 1,000 by 80 metres (3,281 ft × 262 ft)
The FLYIN LFBK which used to take place in LFBK is now based in LFLN (Saint YAN).
This non-profit event organised by volonteers is a unique aerial meeting in France where some prestigious planes are present: turbines (HUNTER, VAMPIRE, ZEPHIR, ..), single or rare biplanes (P51, Cap 232, T28, Broussard …) and exceptional patrols (Staggerwings patrol, SWIFT, Broussard, etc.)…
Now the airfield host aerobatic flights activities and gliding activities
The airport is also occasionally used by the French Airforce. Some Embraer EMB-121 Xingu, C160 Transall and C-130 Hercules come from Avord, Orléans or Évreux Air bases for training. Some flight test are done on the airfield by Safran Electronics & Defense Montluçon.
